Homeopathy explained

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a method of treating a disease with a substance given in extremely diluted form that in larger amounts would produce a similar disease. It is a system of medicine based on the principle of “similimum” or “like cures like” i.e. to treat a disease with a like or similar substance which causes the disease.

History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann who was born in Saxony, Germany in 1755 AD. As a child, he learnt several languages and in fact attained proficiency in eight of them. By the age of 12, he became a language teacher. He began his medical studies in Leipzig, Austria, and then went to Vienna and Erlangen. In 1779, he became a medical doctor and started practicing in Dresden.

Hahnemann was a very kind-hearted doctor and his income was not so much. In order to supplement his income, he started translating books into other languages. After eleven years of medical practice and translating books, he discovered the system of homeopathic medicine. For the first six years or so, he mostly experimented on himself and near relatives. In 1796, for the first time he informed the medical world about homeopathy through medical journals. In 1810 AD, he published his famous book, The Organon of Rational Medicine, also called the Organon of Hahnemann. Then between 1811 and 1821, he prepared the Materia Medica, a book compiling the origin and properties of substances used in homeopathic medicine.

Conventional medical doctors of that time strongly opposed him. In 1821, Hahnemann was forced to move from Leipzig to Kothen because there was a lot of opposition to him by the professional doctors. They did not want him to practice homeopathy because their patients were being driven away to him. They made such a hue and cry that Hahnemann was forced to relocate to Kothen where the Prince of Kothen, who was a very enlightened person, encouraged him to practice homeopathy. He stayed there for 14 years researching chronic diseases and publishing his research in 1828. His success in Kothen drew a lot of unwanted attention and criticism from the professional doctors in the rest of Europe. He was banned from practicing homeopathy in Germany. In 1830, his wife passed away. Hahnemann remarried a French woman and moved to Paris to practice homeopathy there. And from then on he remained in France till his death in 1843.

How Homeopathy Works

Homeopathy works on the principle of ‘like cures like.’ It is a method of treating a disease with substances causing similar signs and symptoms in a healthy person. Before Hahnemann’s time, this system was commonly practiced outside the established system of conventional medicine. However, the treatment offered was limited and not on the same line as homeopathy. For example, Veratrum Album, was given in diluted tinctures to relieve cholera. In fact, this medicine was known for causing violent purging if administered in large doses.

Hahnemann had experimented on so many drugs and was surprised to learn that not only they cause a certain disease, yet at the same time they cured that particular disease when administered in diluted form. During this process of deep thought and experimentation, Hahnemann discovered the fantastic defence system of the human body. He pointed out that the human body is equipped with a natural defence system against any foreign attack. Anything foreign to the body, be it a constituent of food, drug or poison, provokes the body to react against it. External abuse of the body is quickly overcome by the body’s defence system. During continuous experimentation and observation, he suggested that if in the past, some disease had been overlooked and not reacted to by the body, then the introduction of a similar symptoms-producing substance in extremely diluted form would induce defensive bodily reaction to eliminate the disease.

Therefore, in principle, homeopathy is a method of treating an illness caused by an injurious substance with the same or similar substance given in extremely diluted form. It is essential that the similar or ‘like’ substance be diluted to the extent that it causes no harm. And against that very minute and diluted substance, the body reacts and recognises it. Most of the time, the dilution of homeopathic remedies is such that the original substance is virtually absent. It only exists in a non-physical form. The more the dilution, the more potently it works. The potency of homeopathic remedies increases with serial dilutions. This is in contrast to the quantitative summation of conventional medicines.

Surprisingly, the minutest dilutions are perceived by the human body, which in turn reacts with all the necessary defence mechanisms to eliminate the disease. This could not have happened without the existence of God. If God had not equipped the body to perceive the otherwise undetectable amount of substance and prepare the body for natural defence, no homeopathic medicine would have worked beyond the potency 30. However, continuous observation compels us to believe that homeopathic remedies work in very high potencies. This system is so delicate that one must come to the belief of the existence of the soul. The homeopathic medicines in serial logarithmic dilutions contain no atom of the original substance, yet they profoundly work.

The opponents of homeopathy cannot even begin to explain the true nature of allergy. For example, it has been recorded that it’s not just pollen counts or cold weather that can trigger an asthma attack, but a slight change in temperature and humidity. Patients are well aware that weather fluctuations can influence their asthma symptoms. An increase in temperature can trigger an asthma attack. Due to these sudden weather changes, signs and symptoms of asthma begin to manifest in extremely allergic patients long before science, despite all its sophistication, can perceive these changes. Even certain animals are to known to express violent noises before a change in weather becomes noticed.

The soul perceives the diluted homeopathic medicine and creates an impression on the body. Just a message is delivered. And against that very minute and diluted message, the body reacts and recognises the message. Homeopathic medicines are administered in such minute amounts that there is no chance of adverse or side effects on the body. It is the soul, the real delicate entity, which is able to perceive the minute presence of homeopathic medicines otherwise undetectable.

Provings of Homeopathic Remedies

Proving or a homeopathic clinical trial is the process of registering minute details of the actions of a homeopathic remedy on healthy subjects. Hahnemann and many homeopaths have experimented on themselves with various substances and noted down their detailed effects. For proper acceptance of homeopathic remedies into the Materia Medica, the provings have to be done in different times, weather, locations and on people with different gender, age and personality-types. Volunteers are not told of what and from what source they have been given the substance. The experiment has to be repeated in different seasons. The effects of the substance on the body and mind are noted down in detail. A collective group discussion on the methods and results of provings are scrutinised and determined. The final report is submitted to the relevant body that will approve and authorise the use of the new homeopathic medicine.

Preparation of Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies or homeopathic medicines are prepared according to the practices of homeopathic pharmacy. Homeopathic medicines are made to different strengths or potencies in two ways:

  1. The original substance or extract is mixed in alcohol, left in storage for a period of time and its contents sifted. The resulting pure solution is called the Mother Tincture.
  2. A mother tincture undergoes a serial dilution in alcohol and succussion (shaking vigorously). Each dilution of a mother tincture is a 10-fold or 100-fold dilution. For example: a 1X potency represents a 1:10 dilution, 2X represents 1:100 dilution or a 1C potency represents a 1:100 dilution, 2C a 1:10 000 dilution. A homeopathic potency 1000C means the homeopathic remedy has undergone 1000 potentisation steps in a 100-fold dilution step.
Some homeopathic remedies are prepared using the method of serial trituration by mixing the original substance in a powdered sugar substance. The process of serial trituration is repeated until the desired homeopathic potency is required.

Homeopathic Consultation

A homeopathic consultation is an essential part of the homeopathic treatment process. In cases of long-term or chronic illnesses such as a migraine or diabetes, a homeopath must see a client and have a detailed discussion with him or her. A homeopath will find out about the illness as well as the constitution of the person in order to reach the constitutional homeopathic remedy. Both of this must match as closely as possible.

Many clients tell us that their illness do not respond to a homeopathic treatment. The reason for this is because clients were prescribed with casual homeopathic medicines i.e. prescription without having a detailed consultation. From our experience, most clients with long-term, established illnesses respond very well to a prescription after a comprehensive personal examination of the illness, including the client’s state of mind.

For example, there are many causes of migraines. A homeopath looks for the real cause and treats it with an appropriate constitutional homeopathic medicine. Some people experience an aura before the attack of migraine. Sometimes the symptom of nausea precedes the migraine attack. Sometimes a person may experience loud noises before the the attack. Some patients are sensitive to light and smell. Based on the true cause of the illness, a homeopath prescribes the most appropriate constitutional homeopathic medicine. Such clients start to sleep better and the migraine also disappears.

There are no quick fixes in homeopathy. It is essential for a client to make an appointment for a homeopathic consultation. During the consultation, the homeopath will look out for typical signs and symptoms of the illness before prescribing. A homeopath will pay attention to the client’s constitution or personality. Some tolerate heat than cold and vice versa. Some people like movement while others like complete rest. A homeopath keeps all these factors in mind while prescribing a homeopathic medicine.
